Tomorrow i am embarking on a very discomforting journey into camera operating and working the cinematography for a "Fashion" advert. Yes the cringe worthy word "fashion" but i must put my dislikes and stereotypical thoughts aside to get anywhere worthwhile in this business. So to get a feel for what cinematography techniques to put down on the shoot, i have looked into what the aim is when shooting for fashion products, my first instinctive thought is sex sells, as the idea behind tomorows production is quite sexual anyway.
Found this snippit form an article at : http://www.wisegeek.com/
"The goal of fashion advertising is to connect potential customers with the brand, as with other forms of advertising. As with other brands, fashion ads promote a lifestyle just as much as the product, teaching consumers to associate a particular brand with a specific lifestyle and social class. The tone and content of ads may vary, depending on which market the company is trying to target, ranging from very wealthy individuals to people with less disposable income who could still be a valuable customer base"
Quite cutting words, straight to the point and understandable. So in short i have to visually "connect" customers to the product in the shot. So lighting the product to stand out, allowing the product to take center screen, allow the eye to land straight onto that area of the screen with no failure.
I have checked out a few existing advertisements this evening to get a grip on what i should be aiming to achieve:
Sex definitely Sells is what i am learning here
